Chapter 6

WAITING ON THE LORD

I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.

—PSALM 62:1-2 NLT

Waiting on God is one of the most important things that anyone can do. In our society, we are not willing to wait for anything. People expect everything to be instantaneous in order for it to be right. We have learned to push things and manipulate things in order to see results. We are taught to be aggressive because we seem to think that without being aggressive, nothing will get done. That is why most people experience brokenness and weakness before they have a breakthrough and victory in any situation. I have found that waiting on the Lord causes us to become humble and broken in His sight. Within the experiences where I have waited upon the Lord, I have encountered Him and His angels. In waiting upon the Lord, I have given the opportunity for the Word of God and the Spirit of God to have time to work together in unity. Waiting upon God has been well worth the time spent. Waiting upon the Lord gives the Lord time to orchestrate a holy explosion.

The revelation that one must wait upon God is not popular. The condition of our society now requires instantaneous delivery of a solution to every challenge. However, it is true that anyone who has been used of God in both the Bible as well as in history has had to learn the lesson that patience and waiting are often keys to finding a solution to every challenge.

For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones” (Isaiah 57:15).

Being on the other side of eternity, present with the Lord, has changed my perspective concerning what is really important in this life. There are certain truths in the Bible that I no longer question. To me, it does not matter who tries to say things that are not true. And, to me, it does not matter what they say that is not true. I have had the truth revealed to me by the Spirit of Truth. It has come to me both in spoken and written form. To me, the Bible is obviously the truth. I see the plans and purposes for people’s lives are often much greater than they could ever conceive. I know that each person I encounter in this life does not necessarily know the deep secrets that God has planned for each one unless he or she is willing to wait patiently upon the Lord.
